AI video models in 2026: Veo, Kling, Seedance and how to choose
Veo, Gemini Omni, Kling, Seedance, Runway, Luma: what each model does as of October 2026, the end of Sora, and how to pick the right engine for every shot.
Choosing between AI video models in October 2026 means finding your way through a market that shifts every month. Google has updated Veo and launched Gemini Omni, Kling and Seedance are pushing towards 30-second clips, and OpenAI’s Sora is gone. Here is what each engine can actually do, according to official sources, and the criteria a studio uses to decide which one to run.
No made-up rankings: every version mentioned comes with a date and a link. Bear in mind that part of this map will be out of date within months. That is why the way you choose matters more than the name of the model.
Google and OpenAI: Veo 3.1, Gemini Omni and the end of Sora
Veo 3.1
Google unveiled Veo 3.1 on 15 October 2025, with richer audio and more narrative control than Veo 3. According to the Gemini API documentation, each clip runs 4, 6 or 8 seconds at 24 frames per second, with native audio always on, up to three reference images and first- and last-frame control. Extension adds 7 seconds at a time, at 720p, up to 148 seconds in total.
On 13 January 2026 Google added native 9:16 vertical video and 1080p and 4K output. On 31 March came Veo 3.1 Lite, a lower-cost version for high volumes, as the API changelog records. As of October 2026, the Google DeepMind page still lists Veo 3.1 as the latest Veo model.
Gemini Omni Flash
On 19 May 2026, at Google I/O, Google introduced Gemini Omni: a model that takes text, images, audio and video together and edits the result through conversation, one instruction building on the last. The first in the family is Gemini Omni Flash, available in the Gemini app, in Flow and on YouTube Shorts. According to DeepMind, you can generate quick drafts at 360p and then take them to 1080p or 4K. Every video carries the invisible SynthID watermark.
Sora
Sora 2, launched on 30 September 2025, combined synchronised dialogue and sound effects with more convincing physics. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI announced it was shutting Sora down. According to OpenAI’s help centre, the app and web experience were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026. Anyone who had built their whole workflow on a single engine had to start again.
Kling and Seedance: longer clips, more references
Kling
Kuaishou launched Kling 3.0 on 6 February 2026: clips of up to 15 seconds, native speech in several languages, even with characters speaking different languages in the same scene, and multi-shot storytelling. The Video 3.0 Omni variant adds a storyboard where you set duration, shot size, perspective and camera movement for each shot. It can also lift a character’s look and voice from a reference video.
Kling has set the full launch of 4.0 for October 2026, with early access for a limited group since 28 September. On paper: 3 to 30 seconds per generation, 4K and 21:9, stereo audio, up to 10 keyframes and 15 combined references. 10-bit HDR is listed as coming soon.
Seedance
ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0, launched on 12 February 2026, took up to 9 images, 3 videos and 3 audio clips as references and produced 15 seconds of multi-shot video with sound. On 31 July came Seedance 2.5: 30 seconds of audio and video in a single pass, up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips as references, precise edits by timestamp, and multiple characters that keep both their look and their voice.
The 2.0 launch also became a rights story. On 13 February 2026 Disney sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter over the use of its characters. The most powerful engine is not necessarily the safest one to put in a campaign.
Runway, Luma, Higgsfield and the rest
Runway
Runway introduced Gen-4.5 on 1 December 2025, with the focus on weight, momentum and physically grounded motion. The same page admits its limits, such as objects appearing or vanishing between frames. On 11 December it gained native audio and multi-shot video of up to a minute. In 2026 Runway has worked on editing with Aleph 2.0 and opened the platform to third-party models, from Seedance to Gemini Omni Flash, as its changelog shows.
Luma
Luma’s Ray3.2, released on 9 June 2026, is the most post-production-minded of the group: clips of up to 20 seconds at 1080p, native HDR, 16-bit EXR export for grading and VFX, and up to 16 keyframes per clip. The announcement says nothing about audio. Its ground is the image.
Higgsfield and other engines
Higgsfield describes itself as an AI-native creative suite and brings models from different labs into one platform. As of October 2026 its video page lists, among others, Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5, Gemini Omni Flash and Grok Imagine 1.5. Kult Studios is a Higgsfield partner, so read this part with that in mind.
One more name worth watching: Alibaba’s Wan 3.0, released on 24 August 2026, with clips of up to 30 seconds at 1080p and model weights no longer open.
How a studio chooses between AI video models
In the production act of our method the question isn’t which model to use, but which engine this shot needs. A 30-second film can pass through three different engines. The criteria are practical.
- Type of shot. A close-up with a line of dialogue needs native audio and believable lip sync. An action beat needs physics. A long take needs duration. More often than not, those are three different engines.
- Character consistency. If the same face returns in ten scenes, references decide it: how many the model accepts and whether it holds the voice too, as Kling 3.0 Omni and Seedance 2.5 claim to. In a reel like Ronaldo 980 Goals, one stance and six shirts, consistency is everything. The same goes for digital characters and series.
- Camera moves. Keyframes, first and last frames, a storyboard per shot. The more precisely a move is written, the more you need an engine that treats it as an instruction rather than a suggestion.
- Resolution and finish. Veo 3.1's 4K only applies to 8-second clips; Luma’s EXR export matters if colour is graded afterwards. What counts is the final master, not the number on the spec sheet.
- Rights and terms of use. Every platform sets its own conditions on commercial use and content, and the Seedance case shows how much provenance weighs. That is why usage rights belong in the proposal before a single frame is generated.
- Cost of iterations. A good shot comes out of many attempts. Draft tiers exist for exactly this: Veo 3.1 Lite, Gemini Omni’s 360p previews, Seedance 2.5's 480p Draft Mode on Runway, Kling 4.0 Flash. You iterate fast and refine only the chosen take.
Then there is resilience. Sora’s closure showed that an engine can disappear within weeks. Working across several models, through platforms that bring them together, means a project doesn’t stall when a vendor changes course.
Direction comes before the engine
The models will change again before the year is out. What doesn’t change is the work upstream: a clear brief, an approved storyboard, a deliberate choice for every shot. Powered by AI, directed by humans.
If you want to learn how to choose engines on Higgsfield, the Higgsfield Pro course at Kult Academy runs for 12 one-hour lessons over three months. If you need the finished film, see what we make.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI video model in 2026?
There is no single winner. As of October 2026, Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni, Kling, Seedance 2.5, Runway Gen-4.5 and Luma Ray3.2 each excel at different things: the best one is the one that suits the shot you need.
Is OpenAI’s Sora still available?
No. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app and web experience on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026. Projects that relied on Sora need to move to other engines.
Which AI models generate video with sound?
Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.0 and 2.5 and Runway Gen-4.5 all generate native audio alongside the picture, dialogue included. For finished work it is still worth putting it through proper sound design.
